Pilot out, no hot water, lukewarm showers, popping noises, water on the floor — we service most makes and models, rental or owned. Rental repairs are covered. Our trucks carry the common parts, so most repairs are done on the first visit — and if we need to order one, we tell you what and when.

Two ways in, one crew out

Which tank do you have? That decides who you call.

Both routes end with a Mr. Rental Tank technician at your door. The difference is who books the visit and who pays for it.

Rental tank · Vista pays us

Rental tank emergency service

If your tank is rented through Vista Services (look for the Vista sticker on the tank), the service call is booked through Vista — that’s how the visit is covered under your agreement and how we get paid for it.

  1. Book the dispatch with Vista. Call 1-877-318-4782 — the line is answered 24/7 — or email cr.service@vistaservices.ca, or use the service request form on vistaservices.ca. Have the tank’s brand, model and the year from the label ready.
  2. We get the dispatch and reach out. Once Vista sends us the booking we contact you to confirm a date and time, depending on what’s being requested, call volume and where your property is.
  3. Some tanks need the manufacturer first. On many models a warranty repair requires a call to the manufacturer’s tech support before parts are approved, so we may not be able to service you the moment you call — the visit gets booked for a time the manufacturer is available. That’s the same for every rental company; it’s the manufacturer’s warranty procedure, not ours.

No charge to you for covered repairs. A visit caused by something on your side — breaker or gas off, outside vent blocked, tank boxed in — can be chargeable, so run the checklist before you book.

Owned tank · you pay us

Owned-tank repair service

If you own your water heater — bought from us or anyone else — call us directly. You pay for the service call and any parts; we service most makes and models and are authorized for warranty work on most brands.

  1. Call us or send a repair request. 613-233-1115, Monday to Friday 10 to 5; after hours leave a message and we call back. Or use the repair request form with a photo of the label.
  2. We confirm a date and time with you directly, depending on what’s being requested, call volume and where your property is.
  3. Manufacturer warranty on parts may still apply if the tank is inside its warranty period — the same manufacturer tech-support step can be needed, and we handle it.

If the tank is past its life we’ll say so and quote a replacement — rent-to-own or buy — instead of a repair that won’t last.

Not sure which you have? Look on the tank: a Vista sticker means rental — call Vista. No sticker, or a sticker from another company, call us and we’ll sort out who books it.

Before you call

No hot water? Two minutes with this list saves you a trip charge.

We’ll ask you these on the phone. If the answer is on this list, you may have hot water back before a visit is even needed — and if the cause is something on your side, the service call can be chargeable even on a rental.

Smell gas? Don’t flip switches. Leave the house and call Enbridge at 1-866-763-5427 or 911. CO alarm sounding? Everyone outside, call 911.

What we fix every week

No hot water

Pilot lights, thermocouples, igniters, gas valves, electric elements and thermostats — the usual reasons a tank goes cold.

Not enough hot water

Sediment build-up, a failed lower element, a dip tube gone, or simply a tank that’s too small for the house now.

Leaks and drips

Relief valves, drain valves and fittings are fixable. A leak from the tank body means replacement — we’ll schedule it as a priority.

Power-vent problems

Blower motors, pressure switches, blocked vents and error codes on power-vent and direct-vent models.

Noises and smells

Rumbling and popping from sediment, rotten-egg smell from the anode rod — both have straightforward fixes.

How scheduling works

Rental: book through Vista, we confirm the visit. Owned: call us, we confirm the visit. Either way the date depends on the request, call volume, your location, and sometimes the manufacturer’s availability. See the two routes.

Chimney-vent CO check

Blocked flues, corroded connectors, spillage at the draft hood. Annual venting inspection on conventional tanks — why it matters.

Tankless service

Descaling, error codes and repairs on Bosch and other on-demand units.

Repair or replace? We’ll tell you the truth.

A water heater lasts ten to fifteen years in Ottawa. Inside that window a part is usually worth replacing. Past it, a repair often buys a few months before the tank leaks anyway — and some home insurers want a tank over ten years old inspected or replaced, depending on your policy, so check before you get stuck paying for a flooded basement yourself. If yours is that old we’ll say so, quote a new one on the same visit, and — if you want it — schedule the install so you’re not paying for two trips.

If you rent from us, none of this is your problem: we fix or replace it at no charge.

Repair questions

My tank is a Vista rental and it stopped working. Who do I call?

Book the dispatch with Vista Services at 1-877-318-4782 (answered 24/7), by email at cr.service@vistaservices.ca, or through the service form on vistaservices.ca. Once we receive the dispatch we reach out to confirm a date and time. Some tanks need a call to the manufacturer's tech support before a warranty repair is approved, so the visit may be booked for when the manufacturer is available — that applies to every rental company.

My water heater is a rental from you and it stopped working. What does it cost?

Nothing for the equipment — repairs on Mr. Rental Tank rentals are covered, parts and labour, for the term. One honest exception: if the problem turns out to be something on your side — the breaker or gas valve was switched off, the outside vent was blocked by snow or a bird's nest, or the tank was boxed in with stored stuff so we couldn't get at it — the service call can be chargeable. We'll ask you about those on the phone, so run through the checklist on this page before you call. Then call 613-233-1115 and we'll send a technician.

I own my tank. Will you still repair it?

Yes. Call us directly at 613-233-1115 — you pay the service call plus any parts. We service most makes and models and are authorized for warranty work on most brands; if the tank is still under the manufacturer's warranty, parts may be covered and we handle the manufacturer call.

Is it worth repairing a 12-year-old tank?

Sometimes. A thermocouple, igniter, element or thermostat is a cheap fix. But a tank that's leaking from the body, or one that's past its warranty and rusting, isn't — we'll tell you straight and quote a replacement on the same visit.

What should I do if the tank is leaking?

Close the cold-water shut-off valve on the pipe going into the top of the tank, turn the gas control to Off (or switch off the breaker for an electric tank), and call us. Put a towel or a shallow pan under it if you can.

How fast can you come?

Once your service call is booked through Vista, we arrange the visit; depending on call volume and where your property is, it's scheduled accordingly and we tell you when to expect us. We carry the common parts on the truck so most repairs are finished on the first visit. With so many makes and models we won't always have the exact part on board — if we have to order one we'll tell you what it is, when it's coming and what happens in the meantime. If the tank has to be replaced we usually have the right one in stock.

What about after hours?

Rental tanks: Vista's line, 1-877-318-4782, is answered 24/7 and the dispatch reaches us. Owned tanks: call 613-233-1115 and leave a message — we call back. Either way, leaking tank: close the cold-water valve on top and shut the gas or breaker first.

Cold shower this morning?

Call now — most repairs are done today, and if it needs a new tank we usually have one on the truck.
